#4 The Fall (2013-2016)
“The Fall” is a gripping British-Irish crime drama series that delves deep into the psychology of both the hunter and the hunted. Set in Belfast, Northern Ireland, the series follows Detective Superintendent Stella Gibson as she leads an investigation into a series of chilling and meticulously planned murders.
However, what sets “The Fall” apart is its unique narrative structure and the fact that, unlike in other crime dramas, we know who the killer is from the beginning. We get to watch how he interacts with his family, what he’s like at his job. We also get to see how he reacts when the police finally identify him. In this series, we, the viewers, know more than the police and there’s this anticipation and tension we feel waiting for them to catch him.
At the heart of the series is the riveting portrayal of the enigmatic and disturbingly charismatic serial killer, Paul Spector, played masterfully by Jamie Dornan. Spector’s dual life as a family man and a ruthless predator adds tension and intrigue to the story, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats as they navigate his twisted psyche. Equally captivating is Gillian Anderson’s portrayal of Stella Gibson, a fiercely intelligent and uncompromising detective who refuses to be intimidated by Spector’s cunning.
“The Fall” stands out for its meticulous attention to detail and to the psychological toll that violence has on both the victims and those tasked with bringing the perpetrator to justice. Episodes like “Darkness Visible” (Season 2, Episode 5) and “Their Solitary Way” (Season 3, Episode 6) offer emotionally charged moments that prove what a masterful job the actors and showrunners have done. With its compelling characters, atmospheric setting, and nail-biting plot twists, “The Fall” captivated us and deserves an undeniable spot on our list.

Led by the experienced and fiercely determined Detective Mac Taylor, the team includes the skilled medical examiner Dr. Sheldon Hawkes, the easy-going Crime Scene Investigator and Detective Danny Messer, the empathetic Detective Lindsay Monroe, and the NYPD Homicide Detective Don Flack.

The series also explores the emotional toll of the job, with characters grappling with personal demons and moral dilemmas.
Central to the series is the dynamic relationship between Detective Mac Taylor, portrayed by Gary Sinise, and his team. #2 Castle (2009-2016)
“Castle” is a delightful American crime-comedy-drama series that follows the unlikely partnership between bestselling mystery novelist Richard Castle and NYPD Detective Kate Beckett. What sets “Castle” apart is its unique premise, which combines the elements of crime-solving with humor, romance, and a touch of the surreal. The cases the detectives have to solve are innovative and mysterious and there’s always a fun or unexpected plot twist to each case.
At the heart of the series is the charming and witty dynamic between Castle, played by Nathan Fillion, and Beckett, portrayed by Stana Katic. Fans are drawn to their undeniable chemistry and banter, which evolves from a professional partnership into a deep and complex relationship throughout the series. Episodes like “Knockdown” (Season 3, Episode 13) and “Veritas” (Season 6, Episode 22) showcase the emotional depth of their connection as they navigate cases that hit close to home.
What makes “Castle” beloved by audiences and by us is its clever blend of procedural crime-solving with meta-humor and playful nods to the world of mystery novels and pop culture. Beyond the crime-solving aspect, “Castle” explores themes of family, friendship, and the power of storytelling. #1 The Rookie (2018-Present)
“The Rookie” is an innovative American police procedural drama series that follows the journey of John Nolan, a middle-aged man who pursues his dream of becoming a police officer after a life-altering event. The show explores the challenges and triumphs of a rookie cop navigating the streets of Los Angeles alongside younger, sometimes more experienced colleagues. As opposed to other police crime drama TV series, The Rookie follows the activity of patrol officers, cleverly showcasing the types of challenges they have to face daily.
At the heart of the series is Nathan Fillion’s portrayal of John Nolan, a character beloved by fans for his empathy, determination, and unwavering commitment to justice. Nolan’s journey from rookie recruit to training officer is filled with moments of triumph and setbacks. He learns what it’s like to kill someone on the job, to almost die not once, but many times, to be kidnapped, to fight for your life, and so on.
But Nathan Fillion’s character isn’t the only loveable and entertaining one. The entire cast is extremely entertaining to watch. The series does a great job of portraying both the strengths and the flaws of the characters. This makes them more human, more real, and you, the viewer, connect with them more deeply than with characters from other shows.
Something else we love about The Rookie is watching the dynamics and relationship between the training officers and the rookies. Each training officer has different technics and personalities and it’s satisfying to watch how their relationships with their rookies evolve. You can’t help but root for these characters. As the series progresses, we also get to witness the characters’ transformations from rookies to training officers or from training officers to detectives or sergeants.
“The Rookie” also excels at blending high-stakes action, heartfelt drama, and moments of humour. Viewers are drawn to the authentic portrayal of police work, as well as the genuine camaraderie and support among the characters. So if you haven’t watched it yet, do yourself a favor and start binging.
